A Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) verifies that your vehicle met Ontario’s minimum safety standards on the day it was inspected, proving it’s roadworthy and safe to use. You’ll need an SSC if you’re driving for Uber or Lyft, rebuilding a vehicle, transferring a used vehicle to someone other than your spouse, registering a vehicle from outside Ontario, or changing a vehicle’s status from unfit to fit.

What We Check in a Safety Inspection

An Ontario safety inspection is a systematic check of every system that keeps your vehicle safe on the road. A licensed technician puts the car on the hoist and works through:

• Brakes — pad and shoe thickness, rotors and drums, lines, hoses, fluid, and the parking brake
• Steering and suspension — tie rods, ball joints, shocks, struts, and bushings
• Tires and wheels — tread depth, condition, and wheel fasteners
• Lights and signals — headlights, brake lights, turn signals, hazards, and reflectors
• Glass, wipers and mirrors — windshield condition, wiper operation, and required mirrors
• Exhaust system — leaks, mounting, and condition
• Seatbelts and restraints
• Body and structure — including rust or corrosion in structural areas
• Fuel system and couplings

Why Vehicles Fail — and How to Avoid It

Most failures come down to a handful of predictable items. Knowing them before you book saves you time and a second trip:

• Worn brakes — the single most common reason a vehicle fails. If you hear squealing or grinding, get your brakes checked before your inspection.
• Tires below minimum tread depth
• Burnt-out bulbs — the cheapest and most avoidable failure of all. Walk around your car and check every light.
• Cracked or chipped windshield in the driver’s line of sight
• Worn wipers
• Exhaust leaks or a rusted-through muffler
• Structural rust on older vehicles

What Happens If Your Vehicle Doesn’t Pass

You don’t pay twice for the certificate itself. If something needs fixing, we show you exactly what failed, quote the repair, and let you decide — nothing is repaired without your approval.

If you have the repair done at our shop, there is no recheck fee. We complete the work, re-inspect the vehicle, and issue your certificate.

If you’d rather take the vehicle elsewhere or do the work yourself, that’s completely fine — but the re-inspection carries a $90 + HST recheck fee. That covers putting the car back on the hoist, inspecting the finished repair, and photographing and documenting the completed work for the Ministry file, which is required on jobs like wheel-based repairs.

If the timing is awkward, Fix Now, Pay Later financing is available with no credit check.

Out-of-Province & Used Vehicle Transfers

Bringing a vehicle into Ontario from another province, from the United States, or buying privately? You’ll need a Safety Standards Certificate before the vehicle can be registered or plated in your name.

We’re a Ministry of Transportation and Service Ontario approved inspection station for out-of-province and USA-to-Canada transfers, as well as standard used-vehicle transfers between private sellers and buyers. Bring your paperwork and we’ll handle the inspection the same day.

Safety Certificate vs. Pre-Purchase Inspection

These are not the same thing, and the difference matters if you’re buying a used car.

A Safety Standards Certificate confirms the vehicle met Ontario’s minimum legal safety standards on the day it was inspected. It is a legal requirement for the transfer — but it does not tell you whether the transmission is about to fail or whether the car has been looked after.

A pre-purchase inspection is a broader condition check designed to tell you what you’re actually buying, before any money changes hands. If you’re seriously considering a used vehicle, it’s the cheapest insurance available. We do both.
